Abstract

Practices of CSR (corporate social responsibility) in terms of philanthropic only
may eventually cause new burden to the company. This is because of the firm needs to spend
additional operating cost for executing these programs. Somehow, this practice implicates
that CSR has nothing to do with the (core) business of the company. CSR programs are
deployed along with other corporate’s programs and have no implication to other programs
at all. Recently, many businesses shift their CSR orientation and try to integrate the CSR
with their business themselves.
The next question is how would the company align the CSR with the operation? Can
all of CSR programs be hand in hand with the core business? The answer is that not all of
CSR initiatives can be integrated with it. CSR programs with philanthropic measure can still
be planned and implemented with certain portion from all of CSR budget. This idea is also
applicable for finance industry. For example banking, this sector possesses an authority on
money distribution. Aligning CSR values on its core business would mean taking responsible
business consideration into credit assessment of debitors. With the “equator principles”
implementation, integration of CSR on operation of finance industry is not too good to be
true.
